The Coast Guard Program

Our tour of the Coast Guard facility in Fire Island was led by Coast Guardsman Perez Rosario.  He hosted a Q&A during lunch and then took us on a tour of the facility included two boats used for rescue and patrol. The Coast Guard is one of our nation's five military services.  They are a military, multi-mission, maritime force offering a unique blend of military, law enforcement, humanitarian, regulatory & diplomatic capabilities.   The Coast Guard Motto is Semper Paratus - Always Ready.  Nearly 42,000 men and women are actively serving in the Coast Guard to defend America's border and protect the maritime environment.

Coast Guardsman Perez Rosario impressed upon the group the importance of boater safety.  This included making sure that every vessel has enough life jackets in the appropriate sizes as well as having the proper type and sized fire extinguisher.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary performs free vessel safety checks and provides a lot of good information online about how to stay safe when out on the water.  Check out their website to make sure your boat has all the safety equipment required by law.
