Opportunities to be of Service:

- On December 8th at NOON, we will need help transporting the gifts for teens at SCO Family of Services from President Megan's Office at the 1801 House to our meeting location at the American Legion.

- There is a West Islip Interact Meeting on Tues December 7th.  At least 1 Rotarian must be in attendance.  You can help inspire the next generation of service minded people.  The meeting is at the West Islip Library at 7:30pm in Meeting Room B.

- Public Relations Committee is recruiting new members.  The club is looking for members to assist with posting on social media, writing press releases & updating the website.  If you think you can be of service to the PR Committee, please email Kristen Morse.  k.morse@cagins.com

- An easy way to participate in Club Service is to share our club's social media posts on your own social media pages.   Here is our Facebook page.   You can also find us on Instagram @babylonrotary.  Please share our flyers about upcoming projects and photos of our success.

-  Coming soon in January, We will be collecting New & Gently Used Children's Books that will be distributed both locally & across the globe in conjunction with Hindi's Libraries.  1 of 7 Causes supported by Rotary is Education.  More than 775 million people are illiterate.  Rotary's goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education & literacy.   We already completed one leg of our Book Drive at West Babylon Library and it was a huge success.

Babylon Rotary Club donates 250 Turkeys to local community groups for Thanksgiving Dinners!:  Thank you to Rotarians Frank Seibert & Paul Cannella who head up this project for us every year.  Every Thanksgiving the Babylon Rotary Club donates hundreds of turkeys to food pantries and soup kitchens through the Town of Babylon.  It was a pleasure to work with Noel Campbell of the Gerard J. Ryan Outreach Center and Vito Coletti of the Mercy Inn to get Thanksgiving Turkeys to those who need them. We also worked in conjunction with BBQ Brethren & Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition to cook, box and deliver Thanksgiving meals to cancer victims, families & veterans in need.

Supply Drive for Veterans has been extended to 12/30:  WE ARE ROCKING AND ROLLING with our SUPPLY DRIVE!!   The most requested item from Veterans at homeless shelters are T-Shirts, Socks & Underwear.  Our club is organizing a drive for General Needs to get these items distributed to local Veterans. Items will be collected through December 30th.   After that date we will need help transporting our collection.  More details on how to help are forthcoming.

Holiday Gifts for Teens:  DUE THIS WEEK,  DEC 8th!  As in years past, we are excited to shop for the teens at SCO Family of Services.  Teens are often forgotten as most of the focus is on younger children. A representative from SCO Family of Services will be attending our meeting this week to pick up our gifts.

If you would prefer to pick out your own gift,  please hold onto it until our December meeting with SCO Family of Services.  If you have purchased a gift but won't be able to attend the meeting, reply to this email.

Here is a helpful gift guide for items the teens need;   bath and body products, clothes, pajamas, sweatshirts & pants, hoodies, hats, gloves, scarves, robes, slippers, sports clothing, make up kits, earbuds, sports equipment, nail care, electric shavers, hair dryers & tools,  jewelry, watches or gift cards to Amazon, Target & Walmart.

West Islip Interact Club:  A group of students, led by several RYLA students, have form a community based Interact Club.  Their first project is fundraising to purchase gifts for teens as part of our SCO Family of Services gift drive.    One Rotarian is needed at each Interact meeting.  They meet twice a month on Tues at 7:30pm at West Islip Public Library.  Future meeting dates are December 7th & December 21st.

Rotary Foundation Giving:  The Rotary Foundation transforms your donations into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.  Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 Billion on life-changing sustainable projects.  That is the power of Rotary.  Our club strives to have every member donate $100 every year to change the world.  Our club will match up to $50 per Rotarian.   You can donate online: HERE

Rotary Connection:   First Names or Nicknames
From the earliest days of Rotary, members have referred to each other on a first-name basis. Since personal acquaintanceship and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it was natural that many clubs adopted the practice of setting aside formal titles in conversations among members. Individuals who normally would be addressed as Doctor, Professor, Mister, the Honorable or Sir are regularly called Joe, Bill, Charley or Jerry by other Rotarians. The characteristic Rotary club name badge fosters the first-name custom.

In a few areas, such as Europe, club members use a more formal style in addressing fellow members. In other parts of the world, mainly in Asian countries, the practice is to assign each new Rotarian a humorous nickname which relates to some personal characteristic or which is descriptive of the member's business or profession. A member nicknamed "Oxygen" is the manufacturer of chemical gas products. "Trees" is the nickname for the Rotarian in the lumber business, "Building" is the contractor, "Paper" is the stationery or office supply retailer. Other members might carry nicknames like "Muscles," "Foghorn" or "Smiles" as commentaries on their physical features.

The nicknames are frequently a source of good-natured fun and fellowship. But whether a Rotarian is addressed by a given first name or a nickname, the spirit of personal friendship is the initial step which opens doors to all other opportunities for service.

Next Meeting is December 8th at 12:30pm at the American Legion in Babylon, NY.
